Riprap/Seawalls - Dan Kauffman Excavating is the riprap specialist in the area. We have built and repaired the majority of the riprap walls in Salishan and Neskowin. We have done riprap work as far north as Rockaway Beach and as far south as Yachats. The protection of your property is of high concern to our company.
Dan Kauffman has extensive, practical experience when designing, constructing, and installing new riprap, as well as repairing existing riprap structures. His working knowledge in this field gives him respect and credibility with city, county, and state agencies, as well as many local homeowners associations and small communities, including Oregon State Parks, Lincoln County Public Works, the City of Lincoln City, Salishan Leaseholders Association, and Bella Beach Subdivision. His long-term professional relationships with agency contacts and the respect they have for his point of view provide everyone with a sense of professionalism.
The weather and ocean conditions on the Oregon coast change frequently and we are always prepared to help our customers, whether it is a normal riprap job, or an emergency. We check the weather and ocean conditions on a regular basis. Dan Kauffman, company owner, walks the ocean areas, inspecting riprap for damage, both to look at riprap we have placed and/or repaired in the past, as well as to check for any new damage caused by the ocean. We report our findings to the property owners so they can make an informed decision. Many homes do not have full-time residents and this gives them the warning they may need to save their homes.
We build our riprap list all year long and we generally start doing riprap jobs in the late fall through late spring, depending on the weather and ocean conditions.
Give us a call and we will come out and inspect your riprap job.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE TO SAY
December 2022
Just a reminder for how much you are appreciated for your determination and hard work. I silently thank you every time your trucks rumble by. We hear the thundering of the boulders being dumped and just the perseverance of all your workers and the excellent job they're doing. (Fingers crossed for the next King Tides.) Kristie Wasenmiller May 12, 2022
To whom it may concern: I contracted with Dan Kauffman to repair riprap on my oceanfront lot in Salishan. Dan was excellent in explaining every detail of the work taking place. Once work began, the crews worked through heavy rain, gale force winds and high tides to complete the work in a timely manner, keeping me totally informed throughout the entire process. Based on my experience, I recommend Dan Kauffman's company for any kind of excavation work. Emory Bush January 2020
Re: Riprap Repair Completed Late Fall 2019 It is both an honor and a pleasure to submit a recommendation for Dan Kauffman Excavating. Dan’s expert skill, care, and attention oversaw the successful preparation and implementation of a significant riprap project in Lincoln Beach that brought public beach access to the neighbors in the Lincoln Beach area. Most impressive is Dan’s passion for ensuring projects he completes sustain; as Mother Nature wreaks havoc with weather, Dan returns to project sites and works with the community to guarantee satisfaction in jobs that hold up to the test of time. Dan works with the community, for the community, and is community. We can’t say enough good things about Dan and will always be grateful for him and his company. Onward! Dan, Thanks, it's a beautiful riprap job. Bob Christensen February 1, 2010
Letter sent to Molly Morgan regarding Dan Kauffman Excavating I don't know what to tell you, other than these changes of wave heights and conditions don't bode well for beachfront homes built on sand dunes along our coastline. I hope they find a reasonable solution, but I'm afraid that our properties are at the mercy of Mother Nature. I suppose we can hold her off awhile and hope she changes her patterns, such as was the case at Pacific City and Salishan. I know that without the riprap, our place would be in the ocean by now. We were down there last week and two hours after high tide of 7.9 feet, the waves were still making it up and onto the riprap. The wave height that day was 15 feet or so. The revetment work that Dan Kauffman Excavating did has held up well, as has the wall installed back in 1998/1999. That has been 11-12 years now and from the end of 8th Street, back to town, it has held up very well. If you are faced with putting in riprap, I believe all homeowners along the 9th, 10th, and 11th Street areas would recommend Dan Kauffman and Dan Kauffman Excavating. They are by far the most experienced and build the most effective structures, by far. Most of us didn't want to have riprap installed, but we had no choice. Best regards, Dan Mailey |

Dear Mr. Kauffman, I am happy to learn that your company is going to construct the riprap project in front of my neighbor's (Enzor, McMenamin, Souvignier) property here in Neskowin. I have been favorably impressed with the jobs you have done in this area. In fact, I fondly recall visiting with you and your wife out by Pacific Sands Condos at the height of a storm a couple of years ago. You had braved the high tide at the bridge in order to help and reassure those whose property was so imminently threatened. And I have watched your very responsible execution of projects up and down our beach since then. Sincerely, Jean Fay Harmon Thanks Dan for the quick response and for the lessons on driving the loader.
Here's to a peaceful ocean time to relax for you. Good job. Our bank looks great. Sue Warren October 2019
Dan Kauffman has extensive practical experience when designing, constructing, and installing new rip rap, as well as repair of existing rip rap structures. His working knowledge gives him respect and credibility with county and state agencies involved when a homeowner is involved in seeking a remediation permit. He has long term professional relationships with agency contacts; they respect his view; he presents compelling evidence for the need for issuance of an emergency permit. In one case, his homeowner advocacy resulted in issuance of emergency permits in a timely and expeditious manner that otherwise would have been delayed to the detriment of the homeowner. Dan was instrumental in smoothing out wrinkles in my Gleneden Beach oceanfront sale in 2018. It was put on hold until Dan provided assurances to the lender and buyer. In the above citation, his conversation with agency contacts at the referenced site resulted in immediate action by the agency in issuance of an emergency permit. Gerald S. January 25, 2018
Dan, Thank you! Your guys were polite and professional. They did a great job! I'm very happy. Sincerely, Anne Rooney June 26, 2013
Dear Mr. Kauffman, Thanks for the excellent work that you did in a very timely manner. We appreciate you and your team of trained workers. Thanks again. Serena The Shores @ the Ocean A Pacific Leisure Group LLC Company February 10, 2010
Whom it may concern, This letter provides me an opportunity to wholeheartedly and without reservation recommend Dan Kauffman Excavating, Inc. They completed an extensive 180’ plus foot Rip Rap Repair here at Rockaway Beach Resort, Inc. in the winter of 2010. They professionally managed the entire project with organizational skill, competence, communication and all the required paperwork for permits from the state level on down. Their time estimates were always on target, and if additional materials or equipment were needed, they had it scheduled well in advance. The intelligent crew who worked on site and the delivery staff were always a pleasure to work with. The entire project was successful from beginning to end, including the cleanup. Don Osborne General Manager Rockaway Beach Resort May 8, 2008
Dan, Thank you for the beautiful riprap, a lot of hard work, and fighting the elements. We sure feel better now with all of that rock in front of us. Thanks, Ed Hicks August 2006
To Whom It May Concern, I have been asked to provide a letter of recommendation for Dan Kauffman Excavating. We have used Dan Kauffman for our Bella Beach development in Lincoln Beach. The duties have included everything from cutting in the roads, to installing rip rap sea walls. Dan’s crew has done an excellent job working with the other subcontractors involved. Their experience is evident when unforeseen problems arise. They help to set the bar for other contractors. I highly recommend Dan for any work that you might be considering his company for. Please call me if you have any questions or would like more information. Thanks, Erin Briggs Project Coordinator for Current Development |

On behalf of the Pacific Sands Board and Owners I would like to thank you for the professional and complete repair your firm did on our riprap revetment. Everyone is very pleased with the final project and hopefully “mother nature” will be kind to us this next winter. Again, thanks Dan and please feel free to use us as a reference, if you should ever need it. Sincerely, George W. Norman, President Board of Directors Pacific Sands Resort Neskowin OR 97149 Dan,
Thank you for all your help in stabilizing the dune, talking to Mark and me throughout the years, and for taking the time to dispense advice and guide us through this process. I am now back in Portland and hope to get out to the beach sometime next week. I look forward to being able to say thank you in person! June S. February 15, 2019
With threatening ocean tides and severe erosion, going through the process of installing a beach-front revetment is an extremely emotional experience. However, from our very first contact with Dan, we knew immediately he would be the best contractor who could solve our problem. Dan was extremely prompt in delivering a bid for our project, and we felt it was a fair and honest one. Once permits were issued by the state, he started the project immediately. Although he was following a detailed design from our geologist, every construction phase was completed to the satisfaction of the geologist. Dan and his office staff were consistent in communicating updates to us, and he promptly returned our phone calls. We are happy and extremely relieved to say the project is completed to everyone’s satisfaction, and we will continue to seek Dan’s assistance for any repair work that may be required in the future. We highly recommend Dan Kauffman Excavating and thank him and his crew for all their efforts and a job well done; they are the greatest! Sincerely, Mark and Lynn Seaman Lincoln Beach February 16, 2017
Hi Dan, This is just a note to thank you and your son for the good work you did repairing our riprap and making a very useful stairway in Spring 2014. Thanks again, Paul Oltman P.S. It has held up very well. February 18, 2008
Dan Kauffman Excavating Inc., We wish to formally recognize your efforts this past winter to save our homes from the Pacific Ocean. Our homes exist today because of you and your employees. You sacrificed your holidays, worked without ceasing, and indeed most likely risked your lives. We cannot and will not forget your hard work and rapid response to our call. We deeply appreciate all your efforts on our behalf. With great and sincere admiration we thank you, The Rockaway Beach North End Homeowners: Larry and Dorothy Solderholm family Corinne Van Raden family Bonnie Mascott family Cheryl Runold family Roy and Jean Nippert family Shad Balzano family Dan Maily family Margaret Inglis family Dorothy Iverson family February 27, 1999
Dear Dan, Thanks so much for all the quick, quality work that you are your crew did for all of us here in Neskowin. We are all impressed by the WWII- type, get the job done approach that you and your outfit have. The night work in front of Theide's and the Breakers was really something. Everyone in town slept like a baby that nigh to the him of trucks and equipment, knowing that everything was going to be alright. Someone said we should erect a 12' bronze statute of you facing the sea, holding your outstretched palm out as a traffic cop to say STOP! Skip Patten Letter sent to Julie McBee at Dan Kauffman Excavating
RE: Tips Guess what - our 23 truck loads of riprap cost a whole lot less than expected, so I figured I may as well leave a little of the extra money here in town. So enclosed is an additional check for TIPS. You can thank Dan Kauffman Excavating for the low riprap bill which prompted this. Have a good holiday season. Alice Moore |
